Martin Matthew Honan “Marty” of Wilmington, North Carolina was born in Portland, Maine on Sunday , March 20, 1938 and passed on Tuesday July 30, 2024. He passed in Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove facility in Wilmington North Carolina peacefully in his sleep after a 14 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Elsa Maria Honan, his father Martin Mathew Honan Jr., his mother Julia Frances Tierney and daughter Regina Day Hample.
Marty was an exceptional man, he graduated Cheverus Catholic High School in Portland, Maine then began his lifelong career in the United States Airforce both active duty stationed abroad in Vietnam during the war, Germany, Japan, Texas, California, New Mexico, South & North Carolina and then civil servant engineer as Deputy for small business in the USAF until he retired. He dedicated his life to his family and his country. He was a savvy investor and taught the importance of family, country and fiscal responsibility. He lived much of his life in Fayetteville NC and later retired in the coastal community of Wilmington NC. He loved his home state of Maine and made sure his children had the experiences of Maine as well. He loved golf and taking his family on vacations to Sebago Lake Maine, giving each of us the experience of lake cabin life with fishing, boating, hiking and learning the importance of wildlife.
Marty Honan is survived by his children Martin Michael Honan III of Bluffton SC, Barbara Honan of Garner NC , Denise Honan Cottrell of Wilmington NC, His oldest granddaughter he raised as his own daughter Heidi Honan Heckenast of Ft. Worth Texas his siblings Richard G. Honan of Enfield CT, Vincent Honan of Beverly Hills FL, Mary Jalkut of Sanibel Island FL, Dennis Honan of Manchester CT, Barbara Profenno of Westbrook ME, and Terrance Honan of Limington ME. His grandchildren Alex Day , Robert Hausen Jr , Christine Cross, Megan West, Skylar Maria Honan, Allen Cottrell Jr. Tatiana Mucke, Viviane Bitt as well as10 great grandchildren.
Marty was a kind gentle soul of a human being, and the world was a better place having him as part of it. He will greatly be missed by all that knew and loved him. May you rest in peace as you join your wife and all family that has preceded you in death in eternal life, continue to guide those here left behind, until we meet again.
A interment will take place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 12:00PM at the the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery: 8220 Bragg Blvd, Spring Lake, NC 28390
