Rep. Edd Nye, 92, passed away peacefully at home in Elizabethtown on Friday, June 13. 2025.
He was born on September 12 in Gulf, North Carolina to Joseph Burke and Vera Johnson Nye, along with his twin brother, Ted. He graduated Clarkton High School and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years. He settled in Bladen County along with his wife Peggy McKee and entered the insurance business. He was deeply involved in the community and Elizabethtown Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 45 years.
In 1965, he began his long career in public service on the Bladen County Board of Commissioners. He then served the State Senate and the State House of Representatives for over 30 years. As a legislator, Nye was an acknowledged expert on Health and Human Services and eventually rose to a chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee. As a lawmaker, he received “Legislator of the Year” awards from numerous advocacy groups including the Autism Society, the Easter Seals, the Health Directors' Association, and the Mental Health Association.
He is predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Irene “Peggy” McKee Nye, his parents, six brothers and sisters, and a daughter-in-law, Kitty Cole Nye
He is survived by his children, Shannon Nye King (Lynn Grey) Eddie Nye (Sharon) and Allison Nye, and his grandchildren Kathryn King Edge (Marc), Nathan Edward Nye, Anna King Anderson (Jason), Jacob Nye King (Aleigh), Cole Nye (Carlin) and seven great grandchildren.
A funeral service with military honors will be held graveside at Mt. Horeb Cemetery in Council, North Carolina on Tuesday, June 17 at 11AM. Friends and loved ones are welcome to gather with the family at that time.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Val Baker and Bladen County Hospital staff who took such exceptional care of him in his final years and days.
